Opening a hole in the ice and then letting it refreeze results in a clear iced area. Clear ice allows about the same amount of light into that area as no ice. Granted there is no additional oxygenation from the bubbling diffuser which also spreads oxygenated water. Although phytoplankton and benthic algae produce a lot of DO when the sun shines into the clear ice- open water area.
