Pond Boss Forums MANAGING AN EXISTING POND Feeding pull feeder for winter or just leave it in place?

So this is my first winter with a feeder. So what do the rest of you guys up north do in the winter?

I think I have two options.
1) pull the feeder and place it in the loft of my shed for the winter. figure out a way to put a maintainer on the battery from time to time.

2) Leave it in place with it solar panel and turn all the times off or maybe leave one at 1 second to make sure things dont freeze up from setting all winter.

I will follow along on this one. The last two years, I've just left the feeder in place, but pulled the battery out. I periodically put it on a battery tender. My water temp was about 45 when I went by the farm yesterday.

I pull the timer and battery every fall. I don't like the timers exposed to the extreme low temps in NE, just like to be safe. New timers aren't cheap, takes 2 seconds to disconnect and bring indoors until Spring.

I pull my feeder every year. Put the feeder in the shed and pull the battery and keep it in the heated shop.

All battery's should never sit on the ground for storage and should be kept warm. Battery's left on the ground will discharge and if the chemical reaction gets too cold and stops the battery will be junk so keep them warm.

TH feeder, purchased Spring 2011. Client empties feeder of food, turns feed time off, leaves timer and battery in feeder. He leaves timer attached to the solar panel. SW Chicago Suburb. Still running strong on original battery.

I either turn mine off following the procedure above or leave it on one second at noon, depending on whether I have fish in the pond I am feeding or not. No problems here either.
