The only problem you might encounter is if it is a permanent pier, and built close to the water. If the ice forms on the pond, and then the water level rises up and the pier is close enough to the water level, if the ice comes into contact with the bottom of the pier and then still rises, it could lift the pier and posts, no matter what you do.
