Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations ?? for Scott Trava

Scott, a while back you were quoated in Pond Boss mag. as saying In New York you can bring two clean garbage cans to a state hatchery and they would load you up with I believe it was Rainbow trout. Is this still possible? If so where and when? do you have to call first? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Sent you a personel E-mail on the subject of picking up trout in a garbage can. Did not want to brodcast the stupidity of a certain agency . Would like to get relicenced next year.
Haul them properly by a person who does it for a living. Many times we have been called to a customers pond and asked where are the trout we put in. I have seen people stuff 500 trout in a 1 acre pond and feed them a loaf of bread onc a week and wonder why they do not grow like the ones in the resivior. Many people stock fish with out any knowledge of their water chemistry,habitat,and foodchain.

Thanks for the info Scott! I did get your email. I have a bass,bluegill, catfish,perch pond, but my neighbor has a small pond and would like to stock trout.Wasn't actually going to transport in a garbage can. Didn't relize water quality was an issue, I figured we were OK on that being just up the road from the Beaverkill.Do you know if they can be purchased at the Livingston Manor hatchery? If not where would the closest hatchery be? are there only certain times of year this can be done? also do you have any idea of prices? Thanks in advance!! It's nice to have a local expert on board!

Jusf out of curiosity due you get a good survival rate on your perch spawn due to catfish population or are they bullheads. If you go up to beaverkill to get trout stock the rainbows get them in 6"9" range give a chance against old bucket jaws. Stock approx30 per acre .
I was at a pond in Liberty the customer had 300 trout stocked in a 2 month old pond 1 week ago and has lost 150 of them the P.H.was4.5 and Alkalinity 9 ppm. The man who stocked the fish put on the bill not responsible after fish enter the water. I would personally be ashamed to do this to a customer.
I asked the customer what is the present food chain or pellets. He was informed by the stocker that there was plenty of food in the pond for their survival. Hell there was not even grass growing on the deck and only 2"of visability[suspended clay] The pond was approx. 3/4 acre 6 foot deep and piles of dirt and tree piles.
He paid $16,400.00 for this useless hole in the ground to put trout to their final resting place and not on a dinner plate.

Scott, that is a shame, to spend that kind of dough and not end up with a nice pond.This is only my second year of pond ownership,so it is hard to tell of survival rates. I did find perch egg ribbons early this spring.The cats were only stocked this fall so they would have had little to do with survival.I do Seem to have good survival of fry because about 1 1/2 acres is shallow and weedy with lots of little fish (not always easy to ID)I do have two other ponds, one is just LMB and Bluegill, and the other is more of a channel apprx. 150'x 20' which is stocked with fatheads and yellow perch (hoping to grow them out to transplant to the big pond. I wasn't planning on stocking the trout in my pond as I believe they would just be prey.I'll have to search around and read up on testing for PH and ALK.My buddy is a local who believes that you throw them in and they will grow, and laughs at me and my researched ideas.
