My goal is to have trophy bluegill an also several trophy large mouth bass a along with the occasional channel cat for eating. However I want to stock predators this spring. WHAT IS A GOOD RATIO for my bluegill stocking this fall based off my goal?? Any help Will be appreciated as I want to stock asap! Thank you. Pond is approx 10-15 ft deep.
What is your goal, to have trophy Bluegills or Trophy Largemouth Bass? Depending on your definition of a trophy, you won't be able to have both in the pond at the same time. What is your definition of a trophy?
What depth is the pond? 10 feet or 15 feet?
Having a trophy Bluegill pond means that you have a LOT of bass 15" and not larger. Having a trophy bass pond means that you have 1,500-2,250 Northern Bluegills per acre, another 300-500 RES and only 40 Largemouth Bass. You have to watch out that you don't fish for the bass too much or they will get hook shy. That means not fishing for the bass more than a few times a year for the first 3, maybe 4 years. You can't have a trophy Largemouth fishery with only Redears and Hybrid Bluegills - there won't be enough food for the bass. You have to grow approximately 400 to 800 pounds of food for the bass per year, and that does not take into account the fish that have to stay in the pond to reproduce. You will have to feed and aerate the pond because to grow 40 Largemouth Bass to trophy status you will be pushing the carrying capacity in that pond, even with aeration and feeding.
