A pond only 5ft deep will cause the owner lots of various water quality problems. Aeration will help benefit a shallow pond, but draining it and redigging it to a deeper depth will be the best long term management method for a too shallow pond. Aeration can improve water clarity thus allowing more light penetration to grow more plants and algae.
