This has been used for many years. Buttermilk, egg, dog/cat food with little or no proof of results. My guess is that although any of these foods may help start some growth, they will disolve away quite readily when submerged and simply fall off/dissapear. Can't last long, but I suppose it hurts nothing?

Nothing is needed. But, you can speed it up a little by roughing up the plastic with coarse sand paper.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
