I'm getting ready to treat my pond with alum but am a bit hesitant because my dog roams free in the field the pond is in and likes frequent swims. Will him getting in and out a lot cause the pond to turn muddy again or does the alum keep the pond clear even after initial treatment?

If the pond stays muddy, and it's a colloidal imbalance that is causing the clay to stay suspended, the dog swimming will be a good indicator of when you need to retreat. If enough alum is used, there will be enough to keep the clay from becoming suspended for a while. Make sure to buffer it with 50% hydrated lime to prevent a large pH swing and a possible fish kill.

From what I recall from my dog swimming in the Alum treated water...It made him stink like his anal glands were spraying! We even got his glands surgically removed before we finally realized it was the swimming in the pond that made him reek!
