I caught my first two RES today. Maybe my first two ever, but for sure my first two since moving to MO 10 yr ago. These fish impressed me. They were considerably bigger than my biggest BG, and that fish made my day. I've always read that they grow larger than BG, but I never paid much attention to that. I just considered them another type of sun fish that preferred deeper water than BG and ate snails. Now I have much more respect for that species. I caught them on a 9' 4 wt fly rod, and they gave me quite a tussel. They pretty much went where they wanted to go. Fun, fun, fun.

In Texas a few years ago I caught a 11 3/4" inch one when fly fishing for LMB on a large bass popper. I don't know who was more surprised me or the fish!!!

They are almost as pretty as BCP.... They definitely fight harder

I like them too, but they grow slower than the bg in my pond due to lack of pellet feeding. But in the long run a better fish I think

Tracy You may wanna look into trying Optimal feed. My RES have taken to it very well.

RES/BG hybrids grow large, fight well, and readily take pellets in our ponds. My observation is that they also grow quicker than RES. They are however predominantly male....could be good or bad depending upon one's goals.

And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)

hay Sparkplug, what r the chances of my res and bg cross breading for a hybrid? should be plenty in there should they want to mate up.

Tracy I'm guessing here, but I would think it depends upon variables such as availability of spawning partners, water clarity, spawning proximity to other species, etc. I will say they have successfully hybridized in all of our ponds.
