I live in cincinnati ohio and have a 3acr pond that was put in about a year ago. My only water source is runoff during a heavy rain. My questions is, how do I find out if I can put a well or a spring that could help in water replenishing. I did do some research on the web and all I could find out is that, it is a hit or miss for a well or spring. Any input would be great. Thanks guys.....

Lance, what is the size of your watershed and is it wooded, crop land or other. In the south the best pond sites have no water source other than runoff. If you do not have the proper watershed it is going to take a lot of water out of a well to fill a 3 acre pond

Lance, obtain information from your local County Health Department. In Michigan, every time a domestic well is drilled, by law the well driller must submit a copy of the well log to the County Health Department. These well logs will show a description of the geology including the depth to water. Keep in mind that the logs are filled out by a driller and not a scientist, therefore some are better than others. Obtain copies of well logs within 0.25-1.0 mile of your property depending on the number available. Now plot the addresses on a topo map obtained from the US Geological Survey. Draw a line on the map that intersects your property and a number of the nearby wells. I would then construct a cross sectional profile including ground elevation and geologic formations from the well logs. You should be able to map major water bearing units and determine the depth of the well, etc. You can also learn much about clay confining units and coarse gravel seams that may cause groundwater diversions. If all else fails, talk to a local consulting firm.

Your best bet would be talking to a local well driller as they are the most knowledgeable about your area. If you find the right one he will know about what depth you will have to go, water potential, and if you have the possibility of an artesian flowing well (if you have a confined layer) Look in your local Yellow Page.

In my state (Indiana) well logs are available on line at the Division of Water site Indiana Department of Natural Resources. It may be the same as your state.

I believe in Dowsers too, but I would get all the information you can first.

Be aware that the prices well drillers charge will vary considerably.

I have an 88 feet 4 inch well with pump that rates at 45 gpms (220 volt) that would be more than adequate to top off a 3 acre pond during dry spells. Total cost was about $2000.00. I run mine 24/7 in summer for my trout pond.
