Lance, obtain information from your local County Health Department. In Michigan, every time a domestic well is drilled, by law the well driller must submit a copy of the well log to the County Health Department. These well logs will show a description of the geology including the depth to water. Keep in mind that the logs are filled out by a driller and not a scientist, therefore some are better than others. Obtain copies of well logs within 0.25-1.0 mile of your property depending on the number available. Now plot the addresses on a topo map obtained from the US Geological Survey. Draw a line on the map that intersects your property and a number of the nearby wells. I would then construct a cross sectional profile including ground elevation and geologic formations from the well logs. You should be able to map major water bearing units and determine the depth of the well, etc. You can also learn much about clay confining units and coarse gravel seams that may cause groundwater diversions. If all else fails, talk to a local consulting firm.
