Does anyone know anything about leeches? Are they harmful? Should we be concerned about kids swimming in the pond? How do you get rid of them? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Trent, I have found that leeches are nothing more than a nuisance. They pose no danger to humans. They are highly vulnerable to predation by fish, and hide in dense cover and come out of hiding only to investigate movement. By eliminating the cover(usually aquatic plants) near swimming areas, and having a healthy population of bass and bluegills, you should be OK. I have heard that copper sulfate will work as a contact control method for most invertebrates, and recommend that pondowners don't use if for just this reason.
