Keep in mind that you can have the best of both worlds in a situation like that....carry a flexible tape, your cell phone and a fairly accurate scale of some sort with you. Take length and girth measurements, weight and take pics from several angles, THEN turn him (her) loose.

Guys like Cecil Baird here can make phenomenal replicas out of what I just listed above.
