I have notice that I have large numbers of snails on the fish ring made of PVC pipe. I use this ring to feed my fish with. Do snails cause any problems with my fish population?

For snail information see these 3 posts:
1. General Questions section (forum bottom) then Help topic, thread titled "Pond Pests" by Scott Thelen. See post by B.Cody's August 27, 02 post.

2. Questions and Observations topic, July 25 02 thread posted by John Watts, "Yellow Grubs on Largemouth Bass". See B.Lusk's answer.

3. Stocking A New Pond section, Creating The Food Chain, topic "Snails for the Shell crackers by Don Wray.

The snails are feeding on the attached algae growing on the hard surface of the ring. Any other hard surfaces in the pond should also contain numerous snails. Amazing how the snails get off the bottom, to the surface and find the algae on the feeding ring.

The snails in your pond are one of about a dozen or more different species of snails common to ponds. Depending on which species you have will determine how effective redear sunfish will be at reducing your "snail problem". Redear sunfish are sometimes called shell crackers and will aggressively eat them.
