Give 'er a try. To properly fertilize the "old" way it takes several applications, but when done properly you should be able to keep the fertilizer between 18 and 24 inches fairly easily. It takes some time since every pond is diff. to figure out just how much fertilizer to use and how often to keep the desired levels without up and down swings in visibility. Let us know how the buckets work, but past time release fertilizers have had up and down results that you are trying to avoid. The cost is much higher as well, but look forward to the progress report. BTW I love fishing in water with a visiblity of 18-24 inches it makes for a better spinnerbait bite in my opinion.
