I am thinking of doing a small crawfish pond for food.

Is there any good advice out there to read?

Could I just dig a 25x25 hole about 3ft deep to raise them?
Anybody?

Mississippi State has great literature on crawfish. So does LSU.
Here's the crux...crawfish don't need depth, they like shallow. Crawfish feed on plant material. Crawfish farmers raise rice, crawfish eat rice plants, then the farmers add hay. Crawfish eat hay.
Crawfish are seasonal. A pond 25 x 25 will probably raise and support less than 25 pounds of crawfish.
If a crawfish farmer can raise 150-300 pounds per acre, he has had a good year. More than that, he'll throw a boil.

Oops...should've mentioned this...you can buy crawfish in season for less than $2 a pound. Where you are, you should be able to buy them part of the year for less than $1 a pound. Cheaper than a pond. Plus, you support the economy of your neighbor, Louisiana.

Thanks Bob,

Just a thought for a hobby. Mostly just to see if I could do it
I just moved from Louisiana to Mississippi
Lived in New Orleans all my life (40yrs).

BTW Crawfish get as low as 45 cents a pound on a good year

And from all indications, this is going to be a bumper crop year!
