We had amazing success with throwing down fescue and winter wheat, and then covering with straw. We have very thick fescue all around the pond, including the dam.
I never watered it, but I did fertilize. I reseeded again the next spring.
The winter wheat came up strong, and attracted turkeys all summer.
The toughest part was spreading the straw over all the seed, but it made the difference. Where we did not put straw, we had very little grass.

12 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (decreasing), SMB, and HSB (only two have been seen in 5 yrs)
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.
