The reason I ask is because I am now in the shading/pond dye business.

I am pretty sure I can beat any pricing and deliver a superior product. I am certain that it will be harder online due to shipping costs. But Still I am confident that I can save people money. Like half of what you may be paying now.

I think you may need to talk to the people up stairs here to properly advertise.

My brother thought it would be a good idea to dump some pond dye in the little pond I had some HBG and various minnow species in. He misread the directions and thought Cap full per x amount was Cupful. Took forever to flush that out! I scolded him

Im not trying to sneak anything past them.

I never thought you were. If you're serious about trying to get the business going and think you have a good product, I would advertise here just before spring when folks are in the market for dye. That's why I suggested you call the PB office to see what you can work out.

Why would people want to dye a farm pond other than to maybe find the source of a leak? Maybe a small decorative"garden pond", but not a farm pond. I wouldn't think there is a market here.

John, lots of people like to dye their ponds for the nice look but many do so to keep the plant population better contained. Reduced light= reduced plant.

Ok, did not realize it would be useful for plant control. Does dye also help to keep the water a little cooler in summer?

I'm sold on dye for our trophy HBG pond. Just applied a new dose to try and curtail our cold weather FA. Doesn't look like I need to worry about ice cover, however.

Are there any mentors in your new endeavor that could instruct? The first thing would be to learn the product well and it's application. Then, you become the knowledge base for others.

Good point Phil. There have been several discussions about the different kinds of die available. I believe that some without Yellow die in them are inferior. Anyone savy on pulling up old posts? I sure can't.
A friend of mine owns a corporation that produces die and I could distribute at about 1/3 the shelf price but won't deal with all the hassles involved with being legit and the shipping nonsense.

I use Aquashade on an anual basis in both my trophy BG and YP single sex pond and my brood stock holding pond, but it doesn't seem to last as long or is as effective as previous years. Could be several factors, but thought I read somewhere it's manufactured in China now and perhaps quality control is lacking? That said it doesn't look any different.

I had some type of pondweed species go bonkers in my trophy pond this year despite plenty of Aquashade over the recommended minimum amount specifed. Very dense amounts coming up off the bottom in 4 to 7 feet of water. Looks like Sago mixed with Bushy Pond Weed.

Going to use a sonar product next year in conjunction with a dye. I have a couple of local cheaper sources I can tap into for generic dye.

I see no problem with asking about opinions regarding the business feasibility.

My opinion is that it is too easy to use to be financially feasible as a business.

As mentioned before, there have been several discussions about quality and effectiveness of different brands. Havin such a solid and practically never wavering memory it surprises me that I forgot about something from waaay back last August. Bill Cody was doing a chemical analysis of several brands of die. Dang it Bill, ya never told me what yer results were. If you're shy about naming brands on here please send me a pm on the results. If ya don't have the study done yet, lets get on the ball.

I use ADMIRAL pond dye during the cooler winter months. I firmly believe in it as another pond management device. Why I have no scientific evidence to back my claim it appears to keep my water a few degrees warmer during this time of year. It also blocks out unwanted sunlight at depth that helps keep down FA in my over stocked Bioloaded ponds. I stop using it about March here in the South. This allows me to transfer more naturally back into the warmer weather green / blue in the spring bloom. Below is a few pics were you can see what my water color was like for the Handicap / disadvantaged fishing event right at the first of May last year.

I too use AQ Shade a couple times in the spring to help hold back the chara some until end of June. Then I kinda just let it go as it gets pretty darn hot here anyway and fishing is slow. I like the color of the AQS, and it seems to work well for me. I will initially put in enough for 1 acre size pond and then add 12 ounces every couple of weeks to it.

Then only problem is around here AQS is 50 bucks a gallon... That part does suck!!

The small pond we use for swimming has had AQS or some variant thereof for many years now - I've been doing it for a decade, and numerous years prior to that the PO's did as well.

I can say it seems to cut down on the overall vegetation growth - but only if applied early enough. If put in after ice-off here it doesn't catch up very well at all. It almost needs to be applied through the ice.

With that said I'm not positive I'm going to use it this year. After reading and spending a lot of time watching the pond this year (drained and refilled/restocked) it's very obvious to me that what you gain in a clearer shoreline you lose in food source for the fish. My fish seem much healthier with the water color looking like it's supposed to.

After reading some of the posts, i can say that I have also overpaid for several brands of dye ( Including Aqua shade, 50.00 a pop) many times in the past. I have to have it in my pond since it's so fertile. I can say this much. The dye I am proposing does indeed have yellow added, it's much higher concentrated than any other brand that Ive used. Also labeled, and satisfaction guaranteed. If I can pass the savings on here, it's worth a try. I felt ripped off every time I ever purchased aqua shade,or crystal Blue.

The only pond that I dye is a 1/4 acre pond in my neighborhood, but it does not seem like something that I would pay a contractor to do.

The pond dye is around $50-60, and I don't even really need a whole unit in a year.

Plus, the application is just pouring it in at a few different spots.

Perhaps I'm missing something.

Up here in Canada we use a product from Airmax. One quart is about $52 Canadian and dose us the year in one acre.

This product is concentrated and really the best concentrate we have tried. We have tried a bunch over the few years this for us is the best bang for the buck.
