I think it's all a matter of priorities. What are the goals for the pond, and what concessions need to be made in order to "have it all".
No waterfowl of any kind for me, but that's just my take on it. As someone interested in growing fish, waterfowl make too much extra work and are just too risky for my liking. I consider them to be bucket stockers of a different sort.
