Hello, I just signed up for the magazine and forum today, and have already found a solution for combatting my pond's cattails - thanks.

I share a 10 acre pond with a few neighbors, and have culled the largemouth bass population, and am enjoying a fairly well balanced pond. I am already catching quite a few 9-10 inch bluegill.

I'd appreciate some advice on how to best help those bluegill get even bigger. Should I feed them something other than flies I've tied?

Also, I'm about the only person that harvests fish from the pond. I understand the ratio of bass to bluegill that I should harvest, but how many fish per acre should be harvested?

Welcome to PBF Shawn!

Sounds like you have a nice pond. Looking forward to hearing more about your project.

I agree with Pat that pellets can increase the growth rate of your BG. IMHO If your BG were never pellet trained, it might be difficult to get them to feed on pellets though.

As Pat said, Hopefully, some of the pros will jump in with a suggestion or two for you.

Again welcome!

Bill D.

Numbers and species of fish harvested per acre has a lot to do with the goals for the pond. The pond productivity (usually average water clarity) also will help determine how many fish could be harvested. If lake dye or shading is used then this will lower the amount of fish that should be harvested. Provide a few more details and better recommendations can be provided.

Are you anywhere near Lincoln?

110% in agreement with wild Bill Cody.

Different goals for the pond require different management techniques.
