If you like the looks of the rip-rap, you will probably have to use some glyfosate (roundup type) product in about a year to keep the grass and weeds at bay. If you like it to be green down to the water, just wait or sprinkle some grass seed around the rocks and in 3-5 years you will not even know the rocks are there. But they will still be there doing their job.

After about three years, my rock is about half covered in grass. In a couple more years will be mowing all of it.

Old cow ponds around this area it is very common to see severe bank erosion with a drop off at waters edge caused by wind driven wave erosion. My rocked banks are preventing this from happening. Also helps keep water more clear.
