I have no idea how far north they grow. I do know they are not everywhere, even around here. They seem to pick their spots. I have none on the Box Elders on the north end of our property but they are everywhere on the south end. I think the big thing is you need old trees with scars but, that is just my observation. One cool thing is, once you have found one growing on a scar, look there next year and there will be another one. Best way to spot them is look up. Most of mine grow above eye level.
Happy Hunting!
Having a ribeye tonight for dinner so dropped by some of the older trees and picked up these to sauté in butter to dump on top.
Laid a quarter on one for scale in the photo
Mine get a lot bigger but it is early in the season
Bill, the first pic seems like they are very clean. Do you have to skin them or just cut up and wash? Oh yes, what time is dinner tomorrow? As the sissy server in the high dollar restaurant says.... "Enjoy"

My wife went looking for some Box Elder mushrooms this morning and brought back a basket full. Here is a pic of what I consider a large one. Measured 11 inches in diameter. Think I'm gonna need a bigger steak for that guy!
In case anybody is interested...here is a tray of Box Elder shrooms ready for the freezer. We cut them into 1/4 to 3/8 slices and freeze in a single layer for 2 or 3 hours then pack them into freezer containers/bags. Good for around 6 months.
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

Why Bill, whatever lead you to believe that I would crack on you or anybody else? I can't help it your wife has it together so much more than you do. I'm curious as to how the underneath appears. Maybe next time Ms Lovely and talented finds some you might show that. Also, thanks for the open invitation.

Can't show you an underside pic today as she just wacked them all up for the freezer but, if you look at the ready for freezer pic, you will see they are gilled. I will try to walk down in the next day or so and get a pic of one still in the tree and an underside pic. If I can't find one, I will get my wife to do it!

Seasons definitely have their scents - hard to identify, but I know what you mean, JKB. Thankfully I haven't smelled that yet, just Fall smells and sounds of leaf blowers and rakes.
Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Feeding is going to be dropping off substantially.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."
It's that crisp-brisk, kinda cold and fresh smell in the air that you only notice once or twice at the beginning of winter. Kinda early, but definitely was this morning.

Read a Gordon Lightfoot interview once. He believed fall is a "mystical" time of year.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Thanks for sharing that Cecil. A lot of the young folks probably won't know who that is but he has always been one of my favorites. I agree with him 100%. Fall is magical to me and goes by way too fast.
I guess my favorite fall experience is one evening driving home, smell of wood smoke in the air, maple leaves had their fall colors, gray sky and the first snow flakes of the year just starting to fall....

It's a shame if they don't know who he is. I just read about him again on Wiki to see what he's up to. He's still going strong at almost 80 I believe! He works out in a gym 6 days a week!
Yeah I love autumn too but it always seems to short. I have fond memories of fishing for brook trout in small gin clear glacial lake in Massachusetts, in the fall, back in the late 60s and early 70's. They were stocker holdovers, but at times there were about 100 of them following the shoreline of the lake until they found the spring upwelling to spawn on. Colors of the fish and the trees were phenomenal. Nothing like the colors of a New England fall. I don't care what anyone says. Nowhere compares. I've heard people brag about southern Indiana. I was there in Bloomington, I.U. and it's laughable compared to New England.
