Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose Anyone know of a source for YP in S.C.

A new member here and I've been looking at the forum for a bit. I'd like to try YP in the pond on a property I recently bought. The previous owner stated that there were 100 HBG and 1000 FHM stocked 2 years ago. Pond size is approx. 1/3 surface acre and the previous owner stated it is 8' deep with a 12' hole when full. He also stated that the pond is spring fed. I've heard that there is a southern strain of yellow perch, but can't find a source. I've tried both Delmarva and Southland, neither one is breeding YP anymore. Can anyone help?

Went thru same process in June - finally purchase 1" new hatch from Zetts / Karen 304-229-3654 in Inwood Wva.
We are in lower VA and drove up to get them.
Havent seined or trapped to get idea of growth but haven't seen any floater yet.
They were stocked with 1000 FHM , 90 BG and 60 RES
If you call talk to Kathy as it seems no one else knows whats going on. She might have some of this years hatch left .

You couldn't pay me to get fish from Zetts. Lots of bad reports including one locally where they quoted a local Amish cutomer $1000.00 for overnight shipping a couple hundred fingerling YP. Fingerling perch this time of year are stunted as they would have been hatched in the spring. Additionally their special perch that are allegedly crossed with european yellow perch is all hype.

Cecil, how big should YP from this years hatch be by now?

I'm not CB1 but the current year's hatch of YP will range from 2" to almost 8" in October depending on the degree of crowding and the amount of food available to those fish. If there is a wide range of sizes present the largest ones will typically be females and smallest ones mostly males. In crowded hatchery conditions and not pellet trained the majority of the current year class of perch can be 2"-4". A majority of the perch from this year's hatch that receive adequate food will be 4"-6" by October. Those growing well will be plump. Most fish farms will sort the current year class into size categories and price them accordingly: 2"-4", 4"-6", 6"-8".

they do not update the web site ever it seems,.
the guy that answered the phone when I call said he has been there 12 years and they have never had them.

seems they are established in applachacoloa river in FL and two on the SC/GA boarder area. Not sure of numbers.

Often when one wants a fish species that is typically not sold by fish farms in his area the pond owner has to collect his brooder fish the 'old fashioned way' from natural sources. It often depends on how badly one wants a certain fish species.

One may have to drive north two or three states. Not that bad if you only need small fish and you don't mind investing in a small oxygen tank (can rent from welding supply stores), a regulator (got a brand new one on Ebay recently for less than $30.00, an air hose, and nozzle, banding tool, and of course plastic bags. I got all of the above except the tank and regulator from Pentair/AES.

I once picked up smallmouth bass from New York that way. Every two hours I deflated the bags and reinflated with oxygen. If I would do it now I would add some ammonia neutralizer too.

I use 20 by 30 inch bags that fit in a five gallon bucket.

One can haul fewer smaller fish in oxygenated bags for a couple days providing the fish are not overcrowded. Generally for longer distances and times 15-30 3"-4" fish per bag is a low number IMO. Number of fish per bag is the key point for success depending on how far one is traveling and the temperature. Cooler weather and water temperatures (48-60F) is almost always better than warmer (70F+) for hauling fish in most all situations.

Very true Bill on longer hauls. Tropical fish I've heard can be in transit 24 hours or more. In addition to an ammonia neutralizer and oxygen I believe they use some kind of sedative.

I see they have some kinds of bags now that absorb air without leaking. Don't know much about them. Anybody else?

I ordered some 20 by 30's from Pentair/AES and they should be here any day now. Gonna take the tilapia in bags to the four high schools. Screw hauling a trailer and tank. Then fish are 4 or 5 inches now.
