9,000 red snappers spill from truck

DORCHESTER, Ont. -- Thousands of live fish spilled onto a major southern Ontario highway Wednesday after a transport truck rolled into a ditch near this community east of London, Ont.
The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, which carried 9,000 red snappers, causing the fish to spill on the east lane of Highway 401, police said.
"The fish were jumping up and down all over the road when we got here," said Const. Jay Helsby, one of the first provincial police officers to arrive on the scene.
The accident caused police to close the eastbound lanes to traffic for nearly three hours.
"I've seen a lot of things, but I've never seen fish on the road before," said Helsby.
Late in the afternoon, a crew of three men armed with shovels and nets was busy clearing the road.
The fish were on their way to Toronto from Arkansas.
Sgt. Dave Rektor, a spokesman for the provincial police, said the fish would be discarded, but he wasn't sure of the method.
Police closed the road because the truck also carried containers carrying liquid oxygen for the fish to breathe, said Helsby.
The driver was taken to hospital in London with unknown injuries.<<<
