I have a small pond (1/5 acre, 10 ft deep at full pool). It is about 2 ft low right now. It is not aerated. I put 43 CCs in it in April of this year, and the month prior to that I put in 2 lbs of FHMs. The FMHs have spawned several times, I have tons of tiny to 1" long FHMs. I feed the CCs and minnows every day. I now observe very few adult or sub-adult FHMs.
My question, with the spawns I am getting do I need to add some FHMs? I am sure the CCs are feeding more and more on the minnows, as evidenced by the lack of larger FHM. I am getting concerned about O2, but so far everything seems to be ok. I intend to put some HSBs in there in the spring, but just 10 or so.
Thoughts?
Thanks
BB

Hey BB,

One thought, FHM have a very short life span, 1 year+, it could be your original brood stock has just died off. I doubt you would ever see any dead ones as your CC would keep them cleaned up.

I'm seeing the same thing in my smallest pond. Newly stocked last May with about 25 bluegill in the 6 inch range and about 25 YP in the 4-5 inch range along with maybe 5 pound of FHM. I feed AM 600 and 400 every day and the FHM population has exploded with thousands of fry all summer but I rarely see an adult, even when viewing underwater with my Aquaview. I see the BG and YP swim by and some of the BG follow me around the pond when I feed. Neither the YP or BG seem to take the AM very often but they all look in great condition from what I can see and have grown some. I wonder if they are mainly eating the larger FHM but I'm not sure that many fish could eat that many FHM.

I have found the FHM are very slow and easy to catch. Over the last three years they have all but become non existent in our perch pond.

They are prolific but they do swim much slower. I think in the winter months up here they cant get into the rocks as easy as the shiners and they get eaten up.

In ten sets with the minnow trap we may get one of two still but mostly common shiners and emerald shiners. These guys are much much faster and more of a challenge to catch.

If one had a forage pond these would be great but with predators present it just a mater of time and they will be gone.
