Rainman, would your friend be interested in selling us some of his craws? It would save Frank and me some time and money trying to capture some in the river systems in Tenn. We would not need a lot of them to start our research. Assuming they would spawn next spring if we could buy enough to ensure we had both sex's.
Bill Cody, we should be able to eradicate them if needed by crawfish boils.
esshup, you are correct about using sacks (plastic sacks with 1/4" openings) and using bags of ice on top of the sacks. I learned not to transport in coolers with closed lids
Rainman, could you please ask the guy if he is interested in helping out a couple of guys with ponds in E. Texas?

I haul Craw's just like fish, under water and with the oxygen on. I use a sock-like mesh net to keep them together and just drop them in the haul tank, with or without other fish in it.

A potato or onion sack would also work well.

Tracy, the craw I posted the picture of apparently spawns in fall. I had already asked if he'd like to bless others with some of them, and he said IF he did, it would be fall 2016.

As for legalities on transporting the Craws, you would need a $500 aquaculture/transport permit in TN, and whatever Texas requires to haul/stock. Since the TN craws will cross state lines, any state violation triggers a Lacey Act violation at the Federal level. The Fed uses a "value" formula to asses value of species...craws have a value of $10ea, so if you have 35 or more crawfish, it goes into Felony status with astronomical fines...

Rainman, thank u sir for the info. And yes those are the kinda of laws and such I was talking about checking into. I would think if we are not transporting for commercial and if we transport just a few, lets say for eating, it might be ok to transport. it could be a fine line attempting not to cross over. Here in Louisiana, where commercial crawfish farms are located, the crawfish are transported across state lines in all directions from La. With no problems and is done everyday for the purpose of crawfish boils. But again thanks Rainman, if we do not make the trip, please let us know if your client starts selling the craws and where u could deliver to us.
