Sparky, the Impellor seal goes pretty fast...teflon, ceramic or lubricating metal. The volute also pits quickly and becomes brittle, form my experiences.
The alum is pretty acidic and fairly abrasive, then the caustic and highly abrasive nature of the Hydrated lime wear them quickly.
I'm sure the aluminum Volutes and Impeller becoming brittle could be due to using cheaper, impure metals and porosity for the castings, and the seals need very close clearance tolerances for a long useful life...things you won't be assured of in a "cheap" pump, but it all comes down to what each individual considers cost effective for themselves.
