Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Getting Started (long)

Have recently started project in Michigan that will produce six ponds (spring fed gravel pit type), three will eventually be stocked. Currently about 25% complete with largest pond (2A), which incorporated small pre-existing pond(60'x20'x4'). Was surprised to find that former pond contained fish. Have observed 4-5 hand-sized bluegills (currently spawning), minnows, and a large school (1,000) of 1-2" black catfish-like fish. Have not identified baitfish species, which brings me to my question. Have already connected new excavation to existing pond reasoning that existing seed and plankton bank would be beneficial to relatively sterile sand and gravel. Should I seine the pond to determine these species or proceed as if they are not present? If seining is recommended, can someone recommend equipment and source?

Have identified the sunfish. Tonight took a #20 Adams and dapped from the bank. Within 10 minutes had caught at least 20 2 to 3-inch pumpkinseeds. Will try to identify baitfish this weekend. Half acre pond appears to be full of pumpkinseeds, had 4-5 fish after fly at all times. How does this affect my stocking plan? The pond won't be complete for a month. Should I stock bass this fall?
