We have the best luck with the trap in under a foot of water. A good old bagel lasts the longest in the trap for bait. Place the trap so the bait floats to the top of the trap but have the trap just under the water by 1/2".

I find if I place the trap deeper I pick up the emerald shiners and not the fat heads. The crayfish find the trap every day too any where from 3-5 every day even with just a bagel for bait.
