I sighted a large river otter (5 ft) in my six acre lake and ran for a rifle. I believe I ran him off with a shot, but I think he will be back.
Was I wrong to try and kill it? I would gather they can put a lot of fish away in a very short time.

Your only mistake was missing.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Here's the problem with otters and fish. It's an either/or deal. Sooner or later, you will have neither. When they finish eating all your fish, they will leave and then you will have no entertainment. You can look at Todd Overtons post about what damage they caused at his hatchery.
I kill only 2 things, those I eat and those that cause problems. Thank God, I haven't had the opportunity/need to kill an otter. They are only cute on TV. In a pond, they are malicous. Killing it should be a priority.

I have periodic problems with otters. They like to kill for fun. You can always tell when they are around. You will find the largest fish from your pond with a big hole chewed out of their heads and lying on the bank. If they were killing and eating I wouldn't have a problem with them, but they don't just kill to eat.
