Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Raising Forage and Bait What type of crawfish to stock in South Alabama

Looking to try get crawfish established in our 30 acre lake. What specimen should we look at and does anyone have sources. I have been told I should just buy them from the seafood markets buy the sack which are currently about 2.25 a pound here right now and put them in the pond. We would love to get them to a point to be able to harvest them and eat them as well as have a good forage base for the bass but I don't see us getting them that well established. Any insight on this. I don't have much knowledge on crawfish.

Crayfish from the food market could be invasive species and cause denuding of the lake which will significantly and negatively impact the overall sport fishery. Be very careful of what crayfish you introduce and I would only stock species that are already in your state of Alabama.

if they'refrom the US, they're probably red swamp crawfish.

Red Swamp crawfish are native to Bama anyway.

I'm just north of Houston and we had that species on our place anyway before we stocked some crawfish from a local grocer (where we verified they came from near Beaumont TX. )
