Just tell them it is an object lesson so they can benefit from your experiment. You saved them from having to make the mistake themselves on their own ponds.
They will not buy into it, but it's the best shot you got. Like a murder defense attorney. You don't have to produce proof of innocence, only reasonable doubt.
