I apologize if this question is answered in the archives; I searched to no avail.

I'm looking to acquire HSB fingerlings that are supposedly 1.5" in length. This will be my first experience in cage culture. Will a 1/2" mesh size be to big, allowing them to escape?

Thanks

1.5" is probably the average size, meaning some larger and some smaller? It sounds close to me, but hopefully someone who knows for certain will weigh in. If it were me, I would probably shoot for 1/4" mesh to begin with, at least for a few weeks. It may foul with algae fairly quickly, but at least I wouldn't lie awake wondering if my fish were still contained.

Appreciate the effort searching the archives....I realize that isn't always easy.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Pot,
I think that will be too big. I could be wrong but I think the 1/2 measurement is for a side of the mesh and not the diagonal. If I am correct, the largest gap (across the diagonal) will b about .7". I don't think you can keep 1.5" BG in there much less the more fusiform HSB. I believe I recall someone recommending 1/4" mesh for fish under 3" albeit it was likely they were talking about BG

The big cage discussion from '08.

Looks like you need smaller mesh of 1/4-3/8".. see pages 2 & 3.
Also old PB mag issues.. apparently there was a series.

I stocked ~3" LMB, and some of those could get thru 1/2" mesh I'd think.
