Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Help. Fish are dieing.

Lowndes county alabama. 20 acre pond. A few dead bass and bream have been floating up over the last week. Any ideas?

Can you give more information?

How many fish? Sizes?

Anything odd happen with the weather lately? Heavy rains, cold snaps??

What's the depth of the pond?

Aeration?

Any farm land in your watershed where a farmer may have applied something to his fields recently?

Ummm a few dead fish if he actually means a few not like 30 to 50 plus then as Eric would say I would not be to concerned if you have had a 5 or 10 fish die in a pond that size. It could be anything from they had some sort of virus or parasite to just to stressed out to water issues to D.O. issues to weather issues??? Like Sunil said we need a little more info to even begin to give you an answer?

Average depth about 7 ft. Probably overstocked. No aeration. Maybe 6-10 daily dead. 40 or so total as of Friday. 1 pound bream and adult bass.

We have been having some rain almost daily for 3 weeks seems like. Heavy rain at times. Temps have been from lows in 50's to highs in upper 70 ' s, even 86 one day. No farm chemical runoff.

Ok with that said sounds to me that you need to keep some fish and have a fish fry! With D.O. issues they say the bigger fish will die off first... So sorry to hear that man!! Sounds to me like with the heavy rains and no air in the pond you may have had a small turnover issue? Or some low D.O. areas in the pond and the fish got caught in it?

I am no expert on this by any means, but sounds to me like to many fish and not enough D.O. to go around maybe? Lets see what other have to say. How deep is your pond?

Yeah wow 20 acre pond that sounds like a blast!!! Be having me some shore lunch baby!!

Last year was the first year I actually kept some of my BG and man they were good!!

It's kinda hard to do at first. You want a keep them but at the same time you know how hard it was to get that fish that big and you want to throw it back to catch another day!! But harvest is crucial in any management situation weather it be fish, deer, turkey, or whatever some have got to be taken at some point!

Keep us posted if it gets any worse?

I am experiencing exactly what you are talking about. It's almost like they are members of the family and you want to see just how big they can get. I gut hooked a BG a couple days ago so had to keep him. First fish I have taken from the pond.

Could be some of the older fish overstressed and dying from the spawning activities, and water quality changes.

40 dead so far is only 2 per surface acre....that is pretty minor, so far, in the big picture.

Yeah you gotta figure LMB and nice size BG die off in lakes all the time we just don't see it. So it could be a little of both old age and lack of D.O. in some areas of pond.

If you can keep us posted if you lose any more.... hopefully it won't become an event that you don't want to see!! I would be interested to know though if it stops or what happens...
