Redear sunfish, even ones from Arkansas, survive beautifully in 32 degree water for weeks on end, but if you bring them up to 75 F in four hours, well...they get brain damage. They do lots of upside down swimming.

I was trying to move them into a heated tank to increase their growth. I think I got just a little over-exuberant.

I said a couple of brief words before tossing eight of the 22 fish down the embankment.
Would the microwave have been a quicker way to kill them?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Yep! That is quite possible by changing the temp too quickly from cold to warm.

The water warming up so fast may have become oversaturated since warm water holds less oxygen. This causes nitrogen to build up in the fish's blood hence gas bubble trauma aka the bends. This would explain the fish swimming upside down. Did their eyes bulge?
That said the obvious is the stress of such a fast temp change which you are well aware of.
I heat my make up water for my ras tanks as it's quite cool in the basement and I have to heat the tanks anyway. However I make sure I don't do it too rapidly and I do it in a way that degasses it.

Man I hate it when fish die and it's my fault. Was sucking up debris from a tank with a several hundred fingerling bluegill yesterday and sucked up a couple and killed them.

4 hours seems a pretty long period, I would never have that patience . Glad fish never get to 32 degrees...
