While it would have been nice to personally tie into these, it's extremely gratifying to see buddies reap the benefits of Pond Boss fishery management strategies. Most of the time I just keep the camera ready for the ice sprint in hopes of fish like this. Good times. Pond record SMB - 19" and well over 4# Pond record YP - 14" on the nose - photo just doesn't do her justice. Estimate this fish from original YP stocking in '09 at age 6 and was stoked! Note the more streamlined belly typical of a big old male YP. My old big male YP typically look like the perch in your above picture. I assume you did not fillet it which would indicate male or female. A female that size in early January should have a more bulky appearance and noticeably larger belly swollen with developing eggs since this fish came from a dense forage fish pond with pellet feeding. If I had some 4" safe ice I would go out and catch a 14" female YP to show what a female that size in early January should look like. PS - Beautiful smallie! I did check all other YP caught that day, and sex ID was pretty easy. I'll take more shots of fish moving forward to share with forum. Mine aren't that developed this early and my eyes see a little distention in the belly in the picture. But that's just my opinion. All I am saying is I've seen old male perch that look very similar to that fish. We have to keep in mind that fish in TJ's pond are well fed and should have ample stored fat and should appear plump even the males due to fat reserves. The body condition of that YP above does not to me look plump enough for a typical healthy well fed YP in early January. If CB1 would go out on his across the pond dock and catch one of his females we could compare pictures of YP in early January. I will send CB1 a picture of a 14" YP with some 12 YP females from my pond early January 2014. The eggs masses were big enough the guy took the eggs home for eating. Raining all day today and tomorrow changing to snow with high winds and a low of six. You'll have to wait a few days for me to prove you wrong. Seriously I have seen the males you describe too up to 15 inches when I had both sexes in the pond. Could very well be a male. Gotta get off the pot (literally). I have two walleye, two yellow perch, and a largemouth to paint, and a northern to clear coat so I can take the day off tomorrow. Still a lot to learn about raising YP. Since you are mow 'obsessed' with females and don't have males anymore you are forgetting what the fatty males will look like. Just kidding. I know you still have a few males for fertilizing YP eggs. Look for my email of a 14" YP collected on Jan 8th 2014. Actually the YP was 13 5/8". I let the guy keep a 14'er since he was having a hard time catching enough fish from the harvesting slot limit of 8"-12". The guy seined me some bluntnose minnows the previous summer and I let him have a few YP as appreciation.
