My biggest buck to date! Wow this was an awesome hunt! He is a 10 point with a one inch kicker coming right off the back of his brow tine. You cant see it in the pic. I scored him at 120.25 inches. Not a monster but a monster in my book! What a day to remember!!!

Did you get him at your pipe feeder?

Yes! Big time! Sorry was gone for a bit.

Stickem I shot with a model 70 Winchester 270, 4x12 Ni. scope I love that gun.

Hey Dave no believe it or not I was actually in a spot on a white oak trial no feeder nothing sitting on a turkey chair! Now comes the story!

Vamaz,
Story time! smile
Ok so here I was it was 6:15 in the morning and I just got to my regular stand. I have had some action at this stand on Saturday and Sunday but not a ton! And now it's Monday morning and it's gonna be warm. So I am sitting there and the whole time I am thinking this.

What is the definition of insanity? "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result right"?

So I got up at 8:40 went to a hole different area that has not been hunted real hard near some bottoms. This area has like a medium ridge on both side of a acorn flat. The wind was out of the south so I setup camp on the right side of the ridge face into the wind.

So it's about 9 am now. Well about 10 a.m. I caught what looked like movement coming off of the ridge but it was kinda windy so I wasn't sure. I slowly pulled my scope up to see if I could see anything and at about 100 yards away through the junk sure enough there was a doe standing there working her way down the ridge. I can't believe I saw her before she saw me! Man that's half the battle right there!

So I kept watching her and she made her way down in the acorn flat which is about 45 yards wide. She walked right over to me about 10 yards away. That was cool! She was eating and then she looked at me like hmmm that don't look right but did not go anywhere. Then she looked over her shoulder twice looking back? Then she looked at me again. Then she looked back over her shoulder again, needless to say she seemed uptight about something back there! She then out of no where bolted off to my right and I knew I did not move so it couldn't have been me.

Well it wasn't 15 to 20 seconds later here he come just a rolling nose to the trail coming down the ridge looking for his date! I saw that head gear and freaked out!! LOL! I looked at it once through the scope and that was it I did not want to get to uptight! Of course he came down right to the edge of the flat about 45 yards away and stopped right behind a tree as they love to do. I had nothing but a head and neck that was it. So I am looking at his neck NOT his head just waiting for him to take a step or 2!! Finally he stepped forward and gave me his front shoulders and I took it! It wasn't the best shot placement but I feared he was gonna take back off again so I didn't wait any longer!

Well he ran back up the ridge as I was looking at this rack and ran out of site! Ughh! That scared me cause down here tracking deer is hard with no snow!! You got to really be careful specially if you don't have much blood to track! Anyhow I found him about 100 yards up the ridge. My bullet never went through him so I had one of those blood trails that you hate to have!! A drop here and a drop there! I even went the wrong way once and had to start over. I thought maybe I just grazed him... starting second guessing myself you know how you do! Thank the good Lord I found him and I didn't stop looking! My best buck ever first 10 point ever at age 46 done the hard way!!

Sorry so long but you asked for it! smile
Thanks everyone it was an awesome hunt and one of those you will never forget!! He is getting mounted and going in the cabin!!!!

Wow, good thing you kept looking. I had a similar experience with a buck I shot with a 30-06. Shot him quartering towards me, through the shoulder and the bullet stopped under the skin on the opposite side. After 50 yds and no blood I figured I'd missed, but it ate at me so I went back and found him dead as a door nail just a little bit further than I'd looked earlier.

Sounds like you had a great hunt!

Vamaz you did good by going back! I have shot deer right through the heart and they have gone 75 yards! When a deer is running for his life its amazing how far they can go!!

Shoot them high in the shoulder and they drop. Only prob is it ruins the front shoulders most of the time. Heart shot will run like all get out till they bleed out. If it's a trophy I don't want any running or tracking, as I have seen them run into trees an bust up their antlers. Mostly a judgment call and sometimes what shot is provided.

Dude, congrats on the fine deer and a great telling of the events(rushes). It is almost a bonus when ya find a deer that you've almost given up on.

"As is well known, an elk that is shot dead within fifteen feet of your hunting vehicle will still pull itself together enough to gallop to the very bottom of the steepest canyon within five miles. This is known as the elk's revenge."

From a collection of short stories entitled: "Never Sniff a Gift Fish", by Patrick Mcmanus.

Having been coerced into assisting others who were deer hunters, I have occasionally endured a similar phenomenon. Getting an eight pointer over the neighbor's five foot high woven wire fence and up the backside of a multiflora encrusted dam, by hand, is not a task for the faint of heart.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Hey Pat your right high shoulder will drop em. I shot mine in the shoulder but did not get high enough and then the tracking began! Course all of this happened in about 10 to 15 seconds. At least I found him! Thank goodness.

I took a nice mature 9 pt w/16 inside spred this last weekend. Quartering toward me hollered at him and he stopped. And bam he down. High in front of his port shoulder and that was it. He's mybest yet so he at taxidermist. Bullet was in skin about last rib on off side.

Seeing what appears to be an arrow sticking out of the gut of the 10pt that I have been after (on a trail cam photo), makes me want to help someone else give it up. Way back on the deer and from above.

Hey JD thanks, It was a sweet hunt,

In order to kill/catch the big one you must have a passion for it or you will not make it long! smile Although I shot this buck on Monday I sat from dark till dark on Sunday and only saw 2 deer. You either have a passion for it or your half off your rocker to sit and stare at trees all day long smile and or a road. But when it all comes togheter and that's what makes it all worth it!! The rush I got from shooting that buck was an awesome natural high The AD rush is awesome!

Patience isn't hard for me to come by when hunting. I have an old friend named Louis L'Amour that I take along. I expect that he has kept me from seeing a few deer. I used to take the King with me but my other friend Bud Weiser and I have mostly parted company when hunting from a blind.
