The picture doesn't accurately show the scale or amount. When laid out so they are in a group, they cover an area that is 7' long by 2' wide.......

Still haven't weighed them all.

But I've stared at em' a lot.

Me too.....I'm tempted, but the phrase "fulminant hepatic necrosis" somehow wafts through my consciousness, and I chicken out every time [as opposed to chichening in, of course].

I don't know of any other mushroom in the woods that looks like them, so I am confident when I find 'em that they are OK to eat. I just put some butter in a pan, slice/dice them up (after washing them off and cutting away any dirt/debris)and saute them until they barely start to turn brown. I'll saute them with a lid on, until they reduce in volume by at least 50%, then take the cover off to let the accumulated water boil off.

They freeze well, all I do is clean, cut 'em up and throw them into ziploc bags, then toss 'em into the freezer. One bag = one portion.

What I don't eat that night, can be used in an omlet the next morning.

I don't doubt that they're completely safe for one with good knowledge of the woods[such as yourself or Sparkie, although Sparkie made this salad for me with greens and little white berries that made my tongue itch a lot, so I'm beginning to have my doubts about him]. I remember reading a case report of a woman in Ca who made a "wild mushroom casserole" for her fiance and his parents and...you guessed it, liver transplant list at the local tertiary care center went from 0 to 4 overnight. Don't know if their relationship made it though that. I would guess not.

I'll have you know my wild forage salad has gotten rave reviews from everyone who's tried it. Sure, there's been a few allergic reactions, but I think that's due to a "softening up" of the general population, rather than the ingredients involved.

Besides, if you had just used the Benadryl based salad dressing I prepared, you would've been fine. But nooooo, you had to have that fancy $30 a bottle stuff, with a label and everything.

I guess I have to concede the dressing issue, I should have taken your advice. I was a little suspicious of your assertion that one could make a wicked nuoc mam salad dressing with HBG heads fermented in maple syrup.

I'm sure there were suspicious eyebrows raised when Lea & Perrins made their debut also.

Sparkie, I guess I've underestimated you again....it never occured to me that those dropped HBG were part of the "softening up" you were referring to.

Yolk, those white berries don't bother me in the least. In fact, I've never paid attention to the old "leaves of three" saying, because it's never bothered me. I had the same salad, sans dressing and I was wondering why Sparkie was looking at me funny the rest of the day.....

I'll pass on the mushrooms but that grappel bucket sure looks nice.

Always figured if I wanted to eat fungus, would just take my shoes and socks off and lick between my toes.

I have not been as brave since my twenties to eat weird mushrooms I stumble upon but in my teens spent alot of time at "the farm" and never had an itchy tongue but did have a few experiences that were akin to a pink floyd video. Needless to say I determined these may possibly be the wrong ones to eat and have not been a fan since.
