I'm new and we have not even broken ground on my 2 acre pond yet.How do I do a bucket test and what exactly is a pencil test? How deep to I take my sample from or is this test for the bottom after the pond is dug and before any water?

Drill some hole in the side of a bucket. Toss in some dirt and tamp it down. Fill with water and watch the results. All soils leak, Some more than others. Sand leaks more than solid clay and loam somewhere in the middle depending on the mix or makeup of the loam.

No idea what a pencil test is.

I believe a pencil test is done be taking your soil and rolling it with the palm of your hand into the shape of a pencil
If it holds shape you have good clay content

Other people say you can take a wet ball of soil and throw it at you truck door
If it sticks you have good clay
Make sure it's a pickup truck preferably with rust and duct tape holding something together
I believe that's called
"Redneck engineering "


Just remember you can't do that with beach sand
