Planktonic algae is feeding on the good balance or ratio of dissolved nutrients nitrogen : phosphorus. Lack of other plant competition usually results in phytoplankton or filamentous algae using the nutrients. You can reduce nutrients feeding the phytoplankton using an alum treatment. Consider adding some Daphnia that you can buy from sellers on ebay or other online sellers.
