Before renovating my pond, I would manually pull up the root system. Now this was pre-pond boss and I thought all vegetation was the same blush . I now know they are spatterdock, which most call lily pads around here, but really are not the same. The roots were not that hard to pull up, and kept it held back pretty good. Of course, this all depends whether you want to get into the water, every pond is different eek. I can't imagine it being easy to "cut" the roots.
