My pond is one year old. Have tons of forage fish GGBG, HSB and Tilapia. we have only had a few old FHM float since we put em in last year. My question is what is the probability that a dead fish sinks or floats.

My question is what is the probability that a dead fish sinks or floats. There's a 100% possibility that a dead fish sinks or floats.   When a fish dies, it sinks. If the water is warm enough so decomposition will take place, then the decomposition within the fish generates gasses, which will make the fish float if nothing has made any holes so the gas can escape.

well that does make perfect sense. I wondered if fish died from stress or low DO if they tend to spend time on top and float or if they died from natural mortality they may be more inclined to sink. I try to keep an eye on the health of my fish population but a sunken fish never tells you anything.

With the help of the turtle and minnow clean up crew, more fish probably die than you ever see.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
