Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Renovating a Pond or Lake? FINALLY Started!

After many changed ideas of what to do with my pond the renovation has started! It appears that there was about 6' of muck (yes FEET!). I hope the pick comes out and will try to catch a few shots of the work as it progresses.

That's a lot of muck...how old was the pond?

6'! I believe it -- we have at least 4' in ours and it's over 30 years old.

What the muck! Thats all mucked up! Glad to see you getting it fixed though.

I think the pond is almost 50 years old. I saved a few buckets of BG and 10 red ear sliders, the few Crappie I saw didn't make it ;-) I am ready to get power and some aeration now! I sure hope we get some water quickly after they finish!
They also cleaned the dam of all trees so that will be good, wife is not going to be happy but will understand as long as I plant some trees back a ways behind the dam.

So that's over an inch a year of muck.

Has been about 6 weeks and a few good rains so I am starting to think about stocking. I haven't seen the pond yet but at full it will be around 15 ft deep and around 2 acres (IF it ever gets full!). I am thinking LMB/BG only in this one so am thinking as soon as we are out of the heat of summer start with 8 lbs of FHM and 1000 BG. Does that seem correct? I have another muddy 1 acre pond I was thinking of putting 50 catfish for kids to do some fish fry fishing in.

I am so excited to get this thing started!!

Will be starting on aeration as soon as we get power out there.

PS Just got back from Cape Verde off of Africa, had some GREAT Blue Marlin fishing, caught and released 24 Blues in 6 days up to 750 lbs!

Went out to ck the pond and driveway. Was very lucky and have had great rain for the last 6 weeks or so, and the pond looks GREAT! I have been advised by the guys at A&M to add the following.

Both ponds would benefit from a good liming as the pH, calcium, and alkalinity are marginal for the best fish population. I would add agricultural lime (calcium carbonate) at a rate of 900 lbs per acre. The �green pond� would also benefit from 50-75 pounds of calcium sulfate (gypsum) to bring the hardness/alkalinity ratio back into balance. I would also add about 300 pounds of non-iodized stock salt per acre to each pond to increase your chlorides. This water isn�t too bad, just need some small changes to get the best water for fish.

This will be the next step.

Do y'all think this will help with clearing up a little bit of the suspended clay as well?

I guess I should get the FHM in ASAP too.
