Hi:
I had a new pond put in in August 2006 - currently it is about 80% filled. Prior to this month, the water was muddy. Now the water has a green tint to it. Is this normal??? Is there anything I should do??? It is about 3/4 acre of surface water. When full, will be about 11-12 ft deep at the dam, and 3- 4ft deep at the shallow end. Pond is located in SW Virginia

Yep, that's what you are looking for. You have a plankton bloom. That's the basis of pond life and requires sunlight penetration into the water.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave's right. Plankton is good. I'd make it a habit to measure how much clarity you have over time. You should try to learn to use a Secchi disk.

Thanks guys for the info. As you can probably tell, this is my first pond. I have been reading this formum ever since I had the pond dug and have learned a lot. I was hoping it was plankton bloom from what I had read previously. I plan on stocking bream and sunfish in August/September and next June will add bass - this recommended stocking was gained from the Va Wildlife Game and Fishing site. The area is in a semi-drought state right now, but I am hoping that a hurricane will come along this season and completely fill her up.
Again, this is a very helpful site that I am enjoy reading others questions and the advice given.

How deep should you be able to see the disk? I made one, and it could no longer been seen a 2 foot.
