Regarding my hope to build a micro pond (.05-.1 acre) pond in my backyard, there are two HUGE oak trees that I would like not to disturb. Any idea how much distance from the base of the trees is adequate toad impose my pond size but not kill the tree? Maybe this is a question better suited for Tree Boss Magazine- but just thought I'd ask

That is a good question. One I don't know the answer too. I know large Oak trees can have roots that are 20 even 30 feet long!! I have an Oak in my yard that has roots every bit of 20 some feet and 2 to 3 inches round! I can't answer that for you but I can tell you this.
Large Oak trees will if given the chance and are close enough to the pond SUCK your little pond dry!!!
You will be like where is all my water going??? Right up the tree! Keep in mind a mature Oak tree can drink up to 50 gallons of water a day! And if you have 2 of them thats close to 100 gallons of water day if they tap into that pond! That's a lot of water out of your small pond a week!! Just FYI..

I've read that the roots can go out 1.5 times the distance of the height of the tree. Not sure how accurate that is but it's a very safe bet that they can extend well beyond the crown diameter.

I agree. To avoid damaging the trees, don't compact the dirt underneath the crown of the tree, don't change the soil depth underneath the crown of the tree.

Will an oak tree root system grow into my clay pond and compromise the seal?

I've seen tree roots go through concrete and asphalt. I don't think clay will hold them back.

Ummm yes!! Course they seem to take the most easy way to water, but yes roots can do amazing things!! No dirt or clay will hold them back if they want in bad enough that for sure! They will just find the weak spot and keep going!

P.S. That's why you see soooooo many ponds with no trees around them. And if they are around them they are not on the Dam side.

Think of trees clinging to rocks in the mountains. Yes, roots will find the smallest crack... and make it larger.
Roots can also go quite a distance from the tree if given time, especially willows and poplars.
