We have two farm ponds around 40 years old and around 2 acres each. The lilly pads are starting to take over. I was told that aeration would improve the health of the ponds and I have seen some wind mill setups used for the power. Aside from the risk of not having wind, does anyone have any experience in using wind mills to power the aeration system?

Thanks… Very new to the process but determined to improve these old ponds from falling into greater neglect.

For ponds as large as 2 acres and if pond is within 800-1000 ft of electric power IMO it will be more effective and dependable to use an electric aeration system. It could even be lower cost with more gallons of water moved per hour.

Try using a search method (google) for Pond Boss windmill aeration You should get several discussion threads.
Here is a starter link form the Archives about windmill aeration.

Wow, thanks for the information and the speedy reply. More research to do but a great start.

I am calling the electric company to see if they will add a meter near the ponds. Otherwise I would be several thousand feet from power. that was why I asked about wind. I was worried that these windmill systems I saw in catalogs etc were a rip off. Glad to know they do work in some fashion and with their own limitations.

Thanks again.
