Pond Boss Forums FISH & FISHING Fly Fishing & Other Fish Species Golden orfe fish???

Off of another thread.... never heard of these fish. Checked some info out on google and now I'm more confused.

Anybody have these fish??? And whats your opinion if you do?

Well, basically it's ide (LEUCISCUS IDUS) and golden orfe is it's color version Seems like there is little difference between these fish.

I saw talking about orfes in the goldfish thread. If you need a nice predator then this one won't be the right one. Well, they will eat fish but only little ones and after reaching porper size. You know that real predators (pike, perch, bass etc.) have quite a large mouth that's well suited for doing the job - eating fish. Ide isn't designed for that purpose and if you need fish eliminator then better think about different fish.
But anyway this one is quite a nice fish. They usually swim in the upper water and that allows you to watch them

You'll see the size of fish and the size of it's mouth. Ain't that big...

I just posted a brief description in the other thread they are mentioned. They prefer cooler water than goldfish and carp. They were once established in the Potomac River because of escapes from the USFWS hatcheries that raised them back in the late 1800's. However, they appear to be extirpated.

don't they put those fish into garden fish ponds?

They do... That is their most common use.
