I was doing a little fishing on my uncle's lake last weekend and caught this bass. Winds were down and I been wading just offshore doing a little fly fishing. I had caught BG and some small bass. I had just walked up out of the water to change to a spinning rod when I looked back and saw this bass cruising the shoreline. It was like it making a slow lap around the lake. I grabbed a rod with a Skitterwalk on it and threw out beyond the bass. I'm standing up the bank probably 15-20 feet from the water. I didn't want to get closer for fear of spooking the bass in the clear water. As soon is it hit the water the bass disappeared, heading in the direction of the lure. I began the work the lure and the water erupted. I set the hook and nothing. MAN! I thought I had missed the opportunity. I cast out again well beyond the strike and started to work the lure back. WHAM!!! The water exploded again. Fish on! Now I'm using a fairly light action rod with 8lb line. It was a heckuva battle and a lengthy one as well as I didn't want to break off. As soon as I got the bass landed I called into the house and got everyone to come out and see the fish and take the pic for me. I held the fish in the water until they got there. Fish was a little thin I thought, post spawn I would guess. 7.0lbs on the nose. I didn't take any other measurements as I was more concerned with the getting the fish revived and on its way. Not near the fish my uncle caught last month, but a really nice fish none the less....and on top water!!! I would've love to have had the strikes on video.

Good looking fish Ross! On top water that had to be fun! That's one thing I can say about LMB when they hit a lure they don't mess around most times!

Another nice big LMbass. How come we can't get someone to measure the gape or opening width of the mouth of some of these big bass?

I know if I caught a nice LMB, the last thing I'd be thinking about is recording mouth gape. Not to common of a thing to come across, around here anyway.

I know, I know! I thought about it a few minutes after turning it loose. Honestly, my mind is always on not stressing the fish more than necessary and getting on its way as quick as possible, especially after a good fight. I finally started hanging the scale on my belt last weekend. I caught a 3.5, a 4.10, and the 7.0 all within about an hour Saturday....and all on top water, it was a blast! I need start keeping a tape measure in my pocket I guess.

man that is a great catch! real pretty, clear water in the pond too. looks like i see a couple of bass beds behind ya.

how do you measure gape? top jaw to bottom jaw, or side to side?

Side to side is more common, but both will be fine. It would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between width and height.

Very nice fish. It would suit me just fine to have a few that size in my pond in a few years. They got a ways to grow from fingerlings.

Sounds like a fun fight to get it landed.
