I would guess that most bites would be below the knee. I've been "hit" a couple of times both below the knee. Once riding my 4 wheeler and another time not watching where I was walking. I've heard they can strike two thirds of their length but I think that total distance, not height. I did step out of a truck once and stepped right on a rattler, I'm not sure who was more scared but he didn't even strike. My 20 gauge did though!
