My brother is out at the property today and sent me this pic saying they killed a "copperhead" this morning up on our dam. Does anybody know if this is a copperhead or something else? Sorry this is the only picture I have.

Mark, I would vote Texas rat snake. This is a copperhead from our place.  I "like" rat snakes, but I do not like copperheads within range....  PS, glad to hear he is out playing at your place today!!

Would you guys say that "most" snake bites in the US if a person is just walking along would be from the knee down?
I was just curious because I wear pretty thick "mud boots" that come up almost to my knee.
I know you can get bit on the hand reaching into something, but as far as walking thru the grass or woods would most bites be below the knee?

I would guess that most bites would be below the knee. I've been "hit" a couple of times both below the knee. Once riding my 4 wheeler and another time not watching where I was walking. I've heard they can strike two thirds of their length but I think that total distance, not height. I did step out of a truck once and stepped right on a rattler, I'm not sure who was more scared but he didn't even strike. My 20 gauge did though!
It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?

In Illinois that would be a common water snake...and boy oh boy are they common. I can't tell you the number of 'copperheads' and 'water moccasins' people have killed that are nothing but a poor common water snake, completely harmless.
Now given that shot is from Texas I'll defer to folks further south for an ID.

I would vote for below the knees as well. But I am sure there is an expert here who will know for sure.

It looks like a corn snake, Elaphe guttata. It is definitely not a copperhead. It sure is a valuable critter to have around. Diet is primarily small rodents when available.

I wish I had more snakes around my pond. Lots of damage from five star moles.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Poor ole Elaphe guttata, misidentified and paid the ultimate price...they thought he was a copperhead. I hate snakes, but usually just leave them alone. Except maybe a rattler...which I have never seen in the wild in 55 years....or a cottonmouth which I have seen and it was mean as hell.

My fish are too big too eat. :-) Actually I was referring more to Garter Snakes. Are Garter snakes fish eaters? And if so they are small right?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Hey Mark, join me up at Bowie. I can probably find a buzztail for you. Actually I figure more of them see me than vice versa. Unless they are around the house or pond, I seldom bother them.
I have a mobile home that I call my poor white trash trailer house. It is underpinned and we sometimes have mice problems. No mice generally means that a snake has moved in. I haven't told my Wife about that theory.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

A lot of them them must have frozen. I haven't see any kind of snake this year.

My Neighbor came over Sunday asking what I did with snakes at my land....I replied, shoot em! He then said he had a 5' long Black Snake on his porch and asked if I would shoot it since he didn't own a gun. Considering we live in a 400+ home subdivision I politely declined...lol I did go pick it up and put it in a paper lawn waste bag for him to let loose in nearby woods. The snake was pretty lethargic lying on cold concrete. I also told him to expect more snakes looking for a few of the chipmunks he'd built habitat for near his front door.....

I once killed a huge sierra garter snake with 130 king salmon fingerlings in it. It was gorging on them as they were being released into the Klamath river through a culvert.

God ain't that the truth I think people in illinois think there's only two kinds of snakes water moccasin and copperhead and of course the cotton mouth to which they like to call both snakes? I've killed a few water snakes in my pond mainly because they get to be about as big as a coke can and longer than my kids and I like eating my own bullfrog lol..

Here is a copperhead from my backyard.  Got him.  We have alot of copperheads around here. We also have black racers. I read that copperheads make more snake bites on people than any other venomous snake in the US.
